Ewa Gawlik “Abstractions”– the extraordinary nature of everyday details

In the online installment of “Gallery Between the Shelves,” we invite you to a virtual exhibition of Ewa Gawlik’s photography. The works on display encourage close observation and the discovery of beautiful details that are easily overlooked in everyday life.

Ewa Gawlik hails from Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski. She has been photographing since the late 1980s. Since 2003, she has been a member of the local Galeria Galeria MCK Photoclub. She has also worked in drawing and painting. These explorations, which involve the source of light, the light, and the structure of the photographed surfaces, are evident in her paintings.

The artist has presented her photographs in solo and group exhibitions in numerous cities in Poland. Her works have been on display at venues including the BWA Gallery and the MCK Photography Gallery in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, the BWA Gallery in Kielce, the Stara Galeria ZPAF in Warsaw, the “Siedlisko” Art Gallery in Krynica-Zdrój, and the Regional Museum of the “Muszyna State” in Muszyna. They were also exhibited in Przemyśl, Krakow, Zamość, Lublin, Busko-Zdrój, Solec-Zdrój, and libraries in Pionki and Starachowice. The “Gallery Between the Shelves” section combines previous presentations from 2015 and 2023.

In 2019, Ewa Gawlik received the TVP Kielce Award for a set of three works in the “Early Spring” competition. Her photograph was also selected for the post-competition exhibition of the International Biennale of Photography “Definition of Space” in Kielce. In 2022, the set “Transfiguration” was selected for exhibitions at the 27th International Photography Competition “Set — Świdnica.”

The photographs displayed in our gallery often resemble paintings. They attract attention with their striking reds, blues, and greens. Alongside them, there are more subdued variations in shades of gray, brown, and white. Cracks, spots, lines, and gaps create surprising arrangements. When we recognize a face or the outline of an object, at other times a landscape, weapon, or figure emerges.

Ewa Gawlik also photographs plants and flowers in this way. They reveal their colors, shapes, and details, and the names of motifs from surprising angles. In the future, this part of her work may also be used in our retail network.

Ewa Gawlik rarely publishes her cover photo. The opportunity to discover their meaning independently is there. Each one is available.

monitoring photos slowly, enlarged, with attention to detail. Perhaps this exhibition will also encourage us to pay more attention to our own appearance.
